The original 1870s Cook County Criminal courthouse was torn down and replaced by the present, Otto Matz designed building in 1892. Our building has played host to a number of famous trials and trial lawyers, including the defense of Leopold and Loeb by Clarence Darrow and the indictment of the 1919 Black Sox. The arched entry facade is carved with the figures of Truth and Justice. You may recognize it from its use in the opening scene of every episode of Hill Street Blues.
