Kate Roin is a trial lawyer who represents clients around the country in high-stakes litigation, including disputes related to trade secrets, patents, breach of contract, non-competes, stock options, and Civil RICO. Kate was co-lead trial counsel in a breach of contact case related to a terminal emulation software for Micro Focus, and second chair on a trade secret jury trial for Hewlett Packard Enterprise related to automating testing software. She was also a member of HPE's trial team against Oracle that resulted in a $3 billion award for HPE.

Before joining Bartlit Beck, Kate clerked for Judge Terence T. Evans on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and for Judge Robert M. Dow of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Kate is a graduate of Amherst College and The University of Chicago Law School.

Representative Matters

Tricarichi v. PwC (Clark County, Nevada 2022)
Trial counsel in successfully defending PwC in an accounting malpractice case brought by a former client seeking nearly $30 million in damages. Obtained a complete victory in a nine-day bench trial. The Court found in favor of PwC on every element of Plaintiff's negligence claim, and further determined that PwC had proven that the Plaintiff's claim was time-barred.

Department of Treasury Cryptocurrency Regulation
Counsel for Coinbase related to a proposed rulemaking by the United States Department of the Treasury seeking to impose additional reporting requirements on Coinbase and other members of the cryptocurrency community. 

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Cases
National counsel for DuPont on claims that its 2015 spin-off of The Chemours Company was a fraudulent transfer. Handling those claims in the aqueous film-forming foam multidistrict litigation in the District of South Carolina as well as cases in California, Louisiana, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Vermont.

Micro Focus v. Express Scripts (District of Maryland)
Co-lead trial counsel for Micro Focus in two-week jury trial concerning breach of contract claims related to terminal emulation software. 

Seed CX v. Andersson (N.D. Ill.)
Co-lead counsel for Seed CX in trade secret suit against former employee. Successfully obtained a temporary restraining order. 

Pelvic Mesh Product Liability Litigation
Trial counsel for Johnson & Johnson in lawsuits alleging injuries from pelvic mesh devices. Cases pending in a coordinated New Jersey proceeding.

Confie Seguros Holding II Co. v. J.C. Flowers & Co. LLC. (N.D. Ill.)
Counsel for J.C. Flowers, a private equity firm, in connection with alleged securities fraud resulting from the sale of certain insurance assets to plaintiff insurer Confie Seguros Holding II Co.  

TurnKey Solutions v. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (D. Colo.) 
Trial team for HPE in trade secret and breach of contract litigation concerning automated testing software.

John Crane Inc. v. Schein Law Group; John Crane, Inc. v. Simon Greenstone Panatier Bartlett (N.D. Ill.)
Counsel for John Crane as plaintiff in civil RICO litigation arising out of alleged fraud in connection with asbestos injury litigation and corresponding claims under asbestos bankruptcy trusts. 

Hewlett-Packard v. Oracle (Superior Court of California for Santa Clara County)
Trial team for Hewlett-Packard in the damages phase of litigation relating to Oracle's decision to no longer support new Oracle software products to HP's Itanium line of server products.  The jury returned a $3 billion verdict in favor of our client HP and rejected Oracle's counterclaims. Counsel for Bayer in nationwide product liability litigation alleging personal injuries caused by the oral contraceptives YAZ® and Yasmin®. MDL in the Southern District of Illinois and coordinated proceedings in California, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Bayer Pharma v. Watson Labs. & Lupin Ltd.  
Trial counsel for Bayer in Hatch-Waxman litigation against challengers seeking to market a generic version of the oral contraceptive Natazia® in District of Delaware. Complete trial victory for Bayer.

Proprietect v. Johnson Controls, Inc. 
Represented Johnson Controls, Inc. in a patent infringement action regarding foam molding technology used in automotive seat manufacturing in the Eastern District of Michigan.  Case settled.

Wildcat v. Johnson Controls, Inc.
Represented Johnson Controls, Inc. in a patent infringement action regarding safety bolts used in automotive seat manufacturing in the Western District of Wisconsin. 

SecNet Holding, LLC v. Potash et al.
Represented private equity firm in breach of contract dispute concerning purchase agreement in Delaware Chancery Court.  Case settled.  

In re Factor VIII or IX Concentrate Blood Products Litigation (MDL, N.D. Ill.) 
Counsel for Bayer in ongoing world-wide litigation alleging infection with HIV and hepatitis C from blood-based derivatives used to treat hemophilia.
