Bartlit Beck Aids RealNetworks in Securing $761 Million Settlement With Microsoft

10.2005

Bartlit Beck attorneys Don Scott, Mark Ouweleen, Sean Gallagher, and John Byars represented RealNetworks in an antitrust suit against Microsoft that resulted in RealNetwork's winning a $761 million settlement from Microsoft.  RealNetworks filed suit against Microsoft in December 2003 in federal court in San Jose, California alleging that Microsoft illegally tied its media player to its operating system and tried to extend its operating system monopoly into new markets.  Microsoft paid RealNetworks $460 million in cash and will provide $301 million in marketing credits over 18 months.  Microsoft paid RealNetworks more than it paid AOL for claims related to the Netscape browser.  RealNetworks' stock price rose 35% when the settlement was announced.
